Una galleria di sudditi fedeli e cittadini di repubblica regali
Sulla Scena d’huomeni illustri di Gualdo Priorato
abstract
In 1658 the famous historiographer Gualdo Priorato published Scena d’huomeni illustri (1658), a book of elogia, meant to celebrate some of the most well-known politician, captains, and writers of his time. The paper tackles mainly two issues that this volume raises. First, it examines how Gualdo Priorato, through his book, took part to the contemporary ‘querelle des Anciens et des Modernes’, lining up with the modern party. Secondly, it sheds new light on the political message of the book, in which there are several allusions to the contemporary war of Candia, not fully compatible with the classic statements of the neo-roman republicanism.
