Abstract
The chapter offers a brief survey of key early issues surrounding the emergence of the idea of self-awareness in Indian Buddhism and traces its gradual systematization into a more structured and comprehensive framework. It examines developments across Mahāsāṃghika, Sarvāstivāda, Sautrāntika, and Yogācāra, highlights Nāgārjuna’s contribution, and reflects on the link between self-awareness and self-realization.
