Abstract

The article shows a selection of examples of protected industrial heritage (industrial archaeology) related to water, in the Venetian area and the hinterland of the city, built between the last years of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century: artificial canals and their locks; water pumping stations; static or moving bridges; water works system; harbour docks. These minor architectural signs, often forgotten by the public and by the town-administrations, are important witnesses of the technical progress and of the history of the amfibious territory of Venice, in its constant transformation between water and land.
