Abstract

This essay traces the history of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, with particular focus on aspects that have received limited attention in the existing scholarly literature. Special emphasis is placed on the legal protection process that led to the inclusion of the Collection in Italy’s national cultural heritage through the designation decree issued on 25 January 1975. This was followed by an administrative dispute initiated by Peggy Guggenheim herself, which ultimately resulted in the withdrawal of her appeal. The essay also explores the close relationship between the collection and the Palazzo that has housed it as a house-museum since 1949.
