Abstract

Since February 2022, the Republic of Moldova has emerged as a major transit country for Ukrainians fleeing the war. Initial grassroots solidarity initiatives have been replaced by institutionalized systems of refugee reception coordinated by international humanitarian organizations. After decades defined by emigration, today Moldova experiences a new regime of mobility. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and an anthropological perspective on peace and borders, this chapter examines the social transformations generated in Moldova by the war in Ukraine and the risks of reducing public debate to polarized pro-European and pro-Russian positions.
