Due iscrizioni messeniche da Olimpia
Abstract
Queste due dediche votive sono state incise su schiniere e su elmo, entrambi in bronzo, e offerte a Zeus Olimpio in seguito alla vittoria dei Messeni sui Locresi, avvenuta tra il 488 e il 485 a.C. circa. I prodromi della vicenda di cui si fa menzione nella dedica vengono narrati in Erodoto, mentre si ha notizia della battaglia del 488‑485 a.C. in Tucidide. Il dialetto delle iscrizioni rispecchia le vicissitudini tumultuose che investirono la città di Zancle, conquistata da Anassilao di Reggio e ribattezzata Messene. Le iscrizioni hanno carattere di dedica votiva pubblica, dato che si ricorda l’intero corpus cittadino dei Messeni che combatté contro i Locresi e sono state deposte entro pozzi; inoltre, anche la formula con cui le epigrafi sono espresse è tipica delle iscrizioni votive della Grecia arcaica.
