Les inscriptions de Chypre (IG XV et au-delà) : avantages et limites des statistiques épigraphiques
Abstract
The epigraphic material of Cyprus presents a great variety of writing systems: it consists of the so-called ‘Cypro-minoan’ and ‘Eteocypriot’ documents, the Greek cypro-syllabic and alphabetic inscriptions, as well as the Phoenicians and the Latin texts. These writing systems express different languages, save the Greek one which is written both with the syllabic signs and the alphabet letters from the end of the fifth century and during the fourth century BC. Beyond a linguistic approach, the Epigraphy of Cyprus helps to reconstruct the history of the island from the Recent Bronze Age to the Late Antiquity (sixteenth century BC-sixth century AD) and it lends itself to statistical analysis, which could support political, social and cultural studies during a longue durée period.
