Abstract

The third-century ‘crisis’ – particularly in connection with the first barbarian invasions – is a topic which is usually tackled by focusing on the military sphere. Less attention has been paid so far to the solutions attempted by the Empire (at the political, economic, and administrative level) in the most critical phase of the emergency, between Philip the Arab and Gallienus. It is precisely in this context that this study proposes some brief considerations centred on two main, mutually related themes: the government of the eastern provinces and tax management.
