Learning Japanese through prewar Shōwa short documentaries

A multimedia didactic module experience

Abstract

In the fall semester of the academic year 2012/2013, with the participation of learners enrolled in the Department of Asian and North African Studies in Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy, a study was conducted in order to create a multimedia didactic module based on authentic videos in Japanese exploiting the contribution of the net to the teaching of foreign languages. By filtering Japanese authentic videos through Internet streaming technology and organizing a modular teaching approach which included several contents, it was possible to observe the effects of this kind of activity on both oral and written language. From a sociolinguistic perspective, learners can benefit from a multimedia approach and absorb historical contents even though they are not used to watching Japanese television or Internet news streaming on a daily basis. The need can be stressed for a didactic context which could show to learners social, and thus, real linguisticcommunicative activities.
