Una rara scultura costantinopolitana di epoca paleologa a Murano
abstract
It’s possible to recognize in a fragmentary marble sculpture representing the busts of two Apostles, reused on the modern ambo in the basilica of SS. Maria and Donato at Murano, a rare Constantinopolitan work of Palaeologan age. Its careful workmanship appears very close to a group of sculptures in the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul, refined witnesses of that extraordinary cultural climate rightly named Palaeologan Renaissance. On the marble surface of the Murano fragment there are also many remains of polychromy that offer once again an opportunity to draw attention to this widespread technique in the late Byzantine sculpture.
