Abstract

HA and SA distinguish among first, second, and third person. Both varieties have one more person, in addition to the canonical three, which for the time being we will call ‘fourth person’ and is expressed with the affixes -an/a(n)-/i-. The so-called ‘fourth person’ of HA is used to mark a first person plural inclusive (that is, a first person plural ‘we’ that includes the speaker and the interlocutor) (1), as opposed to the first person plural exclusive (that is, a first person plural ‘we’ that includes the speaker, some other referent(s) but not the interlocutor).
