Abstract

This contribution examines translation strategies in the Old High German Diatessaron, especially focusing on the translation of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Luke 15, 11‑32. This paper presents an overview of the translation strategies on the syntactic, lexical and graphematic level, in order to highlight the processes at the base of the translation of the evangelical message in one of its earliest attestations in an Old Germanic language. The text of the Old High German Diatessaron is compared to the translation of the parable in the Lindisfarne and the Old English Gospels, thereby providing a comparative perspective on the translation strategies adopted. The translation strategies examined in this contribution will be related to formal studies on the syntax of this text and open up new perspectives on the study of the Old High German Diatessaron and on its importance for the study of Old High German and translation strategies in Old Germanic languages.
