About us

Edizioni Ca’ Foscari Venice University Press

Edizioni Ca’ Foscari (ECF) is the open access digital University Press of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.

ECF publishes open access journals and books in digital format in all areas of academic research, with a particular vocation for the disciplines of the eight departments into which the University is divided.

The aim of ECF is to promote the dissemination of the results of research carried out both in Ca’ Foscari and in the national and international scientific community, especially where these two contexts come into contact.

All publications are made available online in full text and free of charge, with the aim of fostering and nurturing free access to knowledge and knowledge sharing.

The texts only reach publication after a rigorous process of content selection and evaluation by the ECF Editorial board and the Advisory board of each journal or series, which assess their quality. They are then subjected to careful editorial care and are processed for indexing in major international online databases.

What do we do?
  • perm_device_information Positioning and editorial line

    Edizioni Ca’ Foscari carries out its activity in the field of scientific and academic publishing adopting the Open Access principles and following both the ‘Diamond’ and the ‘Gold’ roads, which ensure the direct and immediate accessibility of the published contents.

    Edizioni Ca’ Foscari adopts a method that provides:

    1. an evaluation process carried out by subject-matter experts (peer review);
    2. integral editing and verification of compliance with editorial standards shared by the international scientific community;
    3. production and management of metadata useful for the dissemination of published research.

    Each journal or volume, and the individual contributions within them, are published in a PDF format that is freely consultable and downloadable. Some publications are availabile also in HTML version.

    Our goal is to promote the dissemination of scientific research for the benefit of all national and international universities or research institutions.

    Many of the titles in our series (monographs and edited books) are also published in a printed edition, both at the direct request of interested readers (print-on-demand), and for commercial distribution in bookshops and online bookstores. In addition, the e-commerce channel makes it even faster to purchase our paper versions, which are periodically selected and updaetd. The two media, paper and digital, are allied and complementary.

    Why choose Open Access publishing?

    • Higher citation and usage: studies have shown that Open Access content is viewed and cited more often than paid-for content. To have more impact, extensive dissemination is required.
    • Greater public engagement: Open Access allows the content to be reproduced, distributed, communicated and publicly displayed without economic, physical or geographical limits.
    • Increased media coverage: researchers can gain visibility when their publications are shared on social channels or covered by major media. There is ample evidence that Open Access publishing can increase researchers’ visibility.
    • Greater interdisciplinary relation: Open Access journals spanning multiple disciplines help researchers connect more easily and provide greater visibility for their research.
    • Wider collaboration: Open Access publications and data enable researchers to carry out collaborative, up-to-date and scientifically valid research on a global scale.
    • Faster impact: Creative Commons licenses facilitate an immediate and transparent exchange of content, guaranteeing an immediate but well-defined form of sharing.
    • Control through copyright: with Edizioni Ca’ Foscari you will usually publish under the Creative Commons By You Attribution 4.0 license, which means that others will be able to disseminate the work, modify it and use it for commercial purposes, provided that a link to the author is mentioned or inserted and the CC license that has been used is specified. Users can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, link directly to the full texts of the documents, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior authorisation from the Publisher or the Author, who still retains the rights of the text and can reuse it for other (including educational) purposes.
    • Copyleft: the publication of each content is preceded by a publishing agreement between ECF and the Authors in which it is established that the Authors fully and immediately retain the rights of their work.
    • Compliance with standards: Open Access journals and books comply with the main editorial standards commonly used internationally.
  • perm_data_setting Processes and tools

    Our editorial production model organically integrates in a single proprietary platform, ECFPeerflow, the processes of:

    1. peer review (scientific validation);
    2. user management: editors, authors, reviewers;
    3. organisation of editorial contents;
    4. attribution of Creative Commons licences;
    5. standardisation of contents to shared standards;
    6. typographical layout;
    7. management of editorial planning;
    8. management of the public website’s contents;
    9. production and dissemination of metadata (DOI Crossref and DataCite; Orcid);
    10. exchange of metadata in the main interoperable formats;
    11. indexing of content in search engines and specialised aggregators

    The aims of these processes are:

    1. cost reduction;
    2. optimisation of publication times;
    3. simplification of the scientific validation;
    4. transmission and dissemination of scientific research.

    These results produce benefits for the authors and the institutions in which they operate: in addition to having produced scientifically valid and quality publications, they also benefit from the visibility and transmissibility guaranteed by the practices of Open Access.
