Abstract
The essay includes an introductory review of the main theories concerning the origins, authorship and dating of the Guoyu 國語 (Speeches of the States, 5th-4th century B.C.), and a complete annotated translation of one of its most famous passages, dealing with the role of ancient ‘shamans’, the changing relationships between spirits and human beings from mythical antiquity down to the late Bronze Age, and the final ‘separation of Earth and Sky’.
