Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the phenomenon of ‘online historical nihilism’ (wangluo lishi xuwuzhuyi 网络历史虚无主义) in the People’s Republic of China. This research maps the political and academic discussion on the new form of nihilism through the analysis of Chinese official documents and scholarly debates. The first part of the article highlights the political and academic relevance of historical nihilism in China, emphasizing its relationship with new media. The second part focuses on the Chinese academic discussion of online historical nihilism. The final section examines the norms and ad hoc initiatives promoted by state-run online portals and private online platforms aimed at limiting forms of online historical nihilism.
