2 • Clavius’s Astronomical Legacy in Lisbon
The Class on the Sphere
abstract
This study provides a brief analysis of the Jesuit’s cosmological orthodoxy and the institutional framework in which it developed. There was a strong link between the Collegio Romano and the College of Saint Antão in the early seventeenth century, with several Lisbon professors being trained in Rome under Clavius, such as João Delgado, Christoph Grienberger, and Giovanni Paolo Lembo. In Lisbon, the Jesuit professors discussed the foundations of Ptolemaic astronomy and argued, alongside Clavius, that planets moved along solid epicycles and eccentrics.
