Capitolo | Le contestate esequie di Carlo V a Roma fra comunicazione e politica (1559)
Abstract
The essay aims to analyse the sources, some of them well-known, relating to the Roman funeral of Emperor Charles V in March 1559, to highlight the special political and communicative context of the City, as a stage of European importance. The working hypothesis is that this episode should be understood by highlighting the different and even contrasting interpretations of certain iconographic elements, which were given by some illustrious spectators. This is to stress how the emotions aroused by the vision of certain images acted as a catalyst for the tensions linked to the difficult international political situation of the years 1558-59.
