Abstract

The essay attempts to reconstruct the origins of the organisation of Venetian trade in the period prior to the preservation of the oldest trade documents in the early 11th century. To this end, it uses the text of a placitum from the year 900, which establishes the duties of the abbot of St. Stephen towards the bishop of Torcello, including a ritual lunch that provides information on the structure of local society and consequently on trade.
