Abstract

This paper offers an overview of Christian Palestinian Aramaic inscriptions found in the Byzantine and Arabian Provinces. After a discussion on the geographical distributions of Syriac and Christian Palestinian Aramaic inscritions in the Middle East, alongside the known places of production of Christian Palestianian manuscripts, the paper studies Christian Palestinian Aramaic inscriptions within their archaeological context and according to their proximity to Greek inscriptions. The paper aims to sketch a paleographical outline of Christian Palestianian Aramaic inscriptions, and proposes some hypotheses about their linguistic and social history within the Byzantine Middle East. Christian Palestinian language is strickly connected to the process of evangelisation of these provinces operated by the Melkite Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
