Negation in Regional Varieties of Odia: Synchronic Patterns and Variations
Abstract
Odia, a major Eastern Indo-Aryan language, exhibits substantial internal diversity and forms a continuum of regional varieties. This paper synchronically analyses the patterns and variations in standard negation across eight Odia varieties, namely Kataki, Sambalpuri, Debagadia, Sundargadi, Singhbhumi, Baleswari, Desia, and Ganjami, focusing on the form, syntactic position, and functional properties of negative markers within the framework of (a)symmetry. The findings highlight synchronic variations by examining the pre-verbal and post-verbal negation strategies and their interaction with the components of the verbal complex in Odia.
