Abstract

Artificial intelligence is a technology that will probably be able to help librarians, but for this to happen from a neither technophobic nor technomaniac perspective it would be good, first of all, to distinguish its different forms (weak, strong, intermediate), and then to ensure that, in its various areas of application, it does not risk coming into conflict with some important values of library ethics, such as privacy, neutrality and the right of users both to understand independently and critically the search strategies that are adopted to satisfy their information needs and, possibly, to be able to modify them freely.
