Abstract
This article aims to analyze the tragedy of mulattos in Haitian post-colonial society, condemned to the eternal limbo of a life in alienation. Amongst the authors who have dealt with this topic, Marie Vieux-Chauvet is undoubtedly the one who has most sensitively narrated the impossibility of defining oneself and of setting oneself free from the chains of racial prejudice that constrain these individuals, particularly mixed-race women. By starting from the analysis of Amour, Colère et Folie (1968), the first novel of the famous trilogy by the Haitian author, we will dwell on the relationship between the protagonist of Amour, Claire, and her bedroom which, subjected to its owner’s ambiguity, manifests the impossibility, for the mulatto woman, of an authentic life.
