Nomi, virtù e ricordo dei defunti nell’epigramma funerario greco

Abstract

This paper shows some devices used in Greek funerary epigrams to underline the name of the deceased, i.d. the most important element of the sepulchral text, which allows him to be remembered: its unusual absence, an emphatic position within the epigram, the word play with the virtues and qualities of the laudandus, the comparison with historical, mythological, and biblical characters who had the same name. The analysis proposes several examples of inscriptional epigrams, most of all from classical Athens, late antiquity, and Christianity.
