abstract

Working conditions in the Italian tourism sector are strongly based on flexibility, which is required in order to cope not only with workloads that can vary withing the year or the same working day, but also to respond to the impact of the crisis and growing international competition. The demand for flexibility and the educational policies that have promoted on-the-job training have encouraged the spread of internships. This paper aims at examining how the working conditions of interns have affected the entire workforce, helping to increase precariousness, low labour costs and worsen working conditions.
