Abstract
The global financial crisis of 2008 entailed devastating effects in the Spanish economy. In the already precarious cultural sector, the recession led to the closing down of many theatres and a dramatic scarcity of opportunities for emerging playwrights. This chapter explores how the crisis shaped not only many of the plays conceived during this time, but also the venues they were performed in. The emergence of initiatives such as Terrats en Cultura, that questioned both the traditional scenic institutions and policies and the centralism of Barcelona, can be read through a non-normative approach, as queer acts of resistance that problematize toponormative uses of spaces.
