Abstract
The present paper focuses on the teaching of Italian Sign Language (LIS) as part of broader language policy actions aimed at empowering the Deaf Community. Specifically, by analysing the nature of LIS’s legal recognition, this study seeks to describe sign language teaching as an act of acquisition planning. This will also be linked to the other two traditional aspects of language policy: corpus planning and status planning. The visuo-gestural nature of LIS and the characteristics of its user community will be discussed to highlight the central role this language plays in identity processes and ideologies. Finally, the importance of a collaborative project between hearing and Deaf individuals will be emphasised in order to overcome the polarisation of the two communities, which seems to be reinforced by the ideology of identity.
