Abstract

For over two decades, the Mexican theater group Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol has been creating a unique form of theater that deftly articulates, constructs, deconstructs, and reconstructs the concept of reality and truth. The Latin American theater scene, particularly in Mexico, is currently engaged in a process of interweaving documents, history, and memory to establish a legitimate space for the exploration of how truth can be constructed through fiction. This chapter draws from the theories of Jürgen Habermas and Michel Foucault to explore how "the real" is approached in Mexican documentary theater. It uses the play Tijuana, a recent work by Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, as an example.
