4 • A Difficult Heritage: Reflectiveness and Reflexiveness in the Tibetan Assimilation of Svasaṃvedana
Abstract
This chapter opens an inquiry into the Tibetan reception of svasaṃvedana (rang rig). The notion led to varied elaborations across Tibetan intellectual life, shaped by distinctive exegetical practices. The discussion considers various interpretative models of self-awareness, ranging from ‘reflectivity’ to ‘reflexivity’ of mind, thereby standing at the threshold between duality and non-duality, and explores the related notion of the luminosity of mind.
