Abstract

Fantastic literature in Latin America emerged in opposition to nineteenth-century literary norms such as realism and naturalism. This ‘transgression’ reveals the ‘hidden’ aspects of our psyche. In this chapter, we will focus on demonstrating the ‘disturbing’ elements in some fantastic Latin American tales. Initially, these tales appear to be playful and innocent, but they contain multiple layers of meaning where ‘sinister’ and ‘unfamiliar’ are constant themes.
