Abstract

The recent conservation work on the arcades of Piazza San Marco, almost completed by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città metropolitana di Venezia offered an opportunity to better understand, through available studies and archival research, the evolution of the construction site of the Napoleonic Wing. In the first decades of the nineteenth century, ideological, architectural, economic, and logistical challenges led to continuous design revisions, even in advanced phases, through a process of building, demolition, reconstruction, reuse of materials, and transformation, culminating in the construction of the royal residence on the square’s western side.
