Abstract

This document examines the PFAS contamination in Italy’s Veneto region through the lens of sacrifice zones. It analyzes the geography of environmental victimization, revealing how it can create inequalities in access to public health services and victim recognition. The psychosocial experience of contaminated communities is explored, highlighting their shock, uncertainty and loss of trust. The role of accidental activism is examined, as ordinary citizens transformed into an epistemic community producing and mobilizing scientific knowledge to identify and address environmental health issues.
