Abstract

This chapter deals, from a theoretical and analytical point of view, with the phenomenon of territorial inequalities, with reference to the Italian context. It highlights that in Italy they are varied, stratified and mutable. After examining the North-South dualism, the chapter addresses the issues of inner areas, left-behindness and environmental inequalities, in relation to the social processes affecting the Italian context, including social polarization, impoverishment, demographic decline. Finally, the chapter focuses on public policies, highlighting that on the one hand they have been unsuccessful and on the other hand they have been more than a few times a factor of production or worsening of territorial inequalities.
