Research Article | Dedication from the Booty of Sellasia
Abstract
The marmor stele from Delos adorned the monument offered to Apollo by Antigonus Doson, the Macedonians and their allies in order to commemorate the great victory of Sellasia over the Spartans (summer 222 BC). The text suggests that the money gained from a partial selling of the booty were allocated for the erection of the statue and the inscription. The dedication bears testimony to one of the last public act performed by Doson at the same time as the Greek cities celebrated him as benefactor and saviour and granted him divine honours just before his death in 221 BC.
