Research Article | Treaty of alliance between Athens and Chalcis
Abstract
The inscription, found in the Acropolis of Athens, discloses the terms of a treaty of alliance stipulated between the Athenians and the inhabitants of the Euboic city of Chalcis, a member of the Delian-Attic League. In the opinion of several scholars, the document dates back to 446-445 B.C., when Pericles intervened in Euboea to suppress a revolt against Athens, although it does not provide any explicit reference to the occasion of its publication. The agreements were not signed on an equal footing but were reformulated by Athenians in the form of measures imposed upon the allies and were presumably approved during a single session of Athens’ assembly.
