Epitaphs for Menas of Bithynia Fallen in Battle
Abstract
The stele bears two epitaphs for the Bithynian officer Menas, who fell in battle most likely on the plain of Corupedium, near the Phrygian River, in Lydia. The stele is accompanied by a bas-relief, in which the battle scene described in the first epigram (ll. 5‑6) is depicted. The epitaphs are separated by ἄλλο. Regarding the identification of the battle, various hypotheses have been proposed, including the Battle of Corupedium between Lysimachus and Seleucus I (281 BC), the Battle of Magnesia between Rome and Antiochus III (190/189 BC), and the conflicts between the Kingdoms of Bithynia and Pergamon (208‑183 BC; 156‑154 BC).
