La notion de patria dans la pertica de Carthage
Abstract
The notion of patria in Rome has been the subject of old and recent debates. If for a Roman citizen there is only one citizenship, outside of Rome he also belongs to a city, even to several, and the notion of “homeland” can therefore have multiple meanings. This is the issue that we propose to examine in relation to Carthage, a Roman colony which exercised its authority over a vast territory, called pertica, comprising not only numerous communities and pilgrim cities but also districts called pagi bringing together citizens of Carthage. The study of the following expressions, pago patriae, patriae suae, patriam nostram and omnibus honoribus in patria sua functus, attested in inscriptions by communities dependent on Carthage, allows us to conclude that, in these localities, patria refers to these communities and not to the mother colony.
