Slavofobi o slavofili? G.A. Borgese ministro degli Esteri ombra al “Corriere della sera” (1917-1920)

Abstract

In “Corriere della Sera”, directed by Luigi Albertini, G. A. Borgese wrote about politics on the front page. In 1917 the writer introduced the idea – inspired by Mazzini’s thought – of Italy leading the resurgence (“risorgimento”) of the Slavic peoples. This idea went against the Italian Minister for foreign affairs Sidney Sonnino, while it was close to the Leonida’s Bissolati and Gaetano Salvemini’s destructive attack on Austria (Delenda Austria!): in a sense it shifted from the Pact of London (1915) to the Pact of Rome (1918). Instead, in the same newspaper, the slavophobic Gabriele D’Annunzio attacked the “mutilated victory”. After the war, Borgese accepted Italy’s new border at Brennero’s mountain pass, which embraced the anti-Italian irredentism of the majority, but he would be considered a defeatist regarding the fate of the Slavic peoples.
