Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the relations of Italian opera with some products of nineteenth-century Greek literature that, namely, belong to two different genres: comic theatre and popular fiction. In the first case, it is the 1859 comedy entitled Ψευτοξενοδόχος (The Fake Landlord) by a certain K.P., and of the short story entitled Πατροκατάρατος by Marinos Papadòpulos Vretòs from 1845. Both texts contain pronounced hints of Italian lyric texts, testifying to an early diffusion of lyrical opera on Greek soil and to a general appreciation on the part of the learned public that, in any case, was divided between excitement about the novelty and grudging reluctance about the general consensus on the foreign lyrical genre.
