On Some Murals of St. George (St. Gevorg) Church of Salmast in Iran and the Armenian Art
Abstract
There are numerous works of Armenian art created during centuries in Armenia and in the territories inhabited by Armenians, that were never put in scholarly circulation and stayed unknown to experts. As Armenia many times became the battlefield between different powers and was occupied by them, numerous examples of its architecture and sculpture were damaged or destroyed, illustrated manuscripts and objects of applied arts were looted and disappeared. Also, numerous wall paintings were lost forever or come down to us in fragments as numerous churches during foreign yokes were destroyed and demolished by invaders. Many examples of architecture, sculpture, khachkars and tombs were abandoned and forgotten when the Armenians left the territories in the countries where they have once established their communities.
