Abstract

This introduction presents the main themes of L’Italia, l’altrove. It discusses how spaces are constructed and deconstructed in and through narration rather than being only constituted by physical elements. In particular, the chapter argues that literature and cinema about migration place mobility rather than fixity at the center of their attention, thus allowing us to look at places from a transient and mutable position. The conceptualization of space is also connected to precise dynamics of power and privilege that the three main sections of the volume – which focus respectively on places, spaces, and crossings – aim to examine.
