Minerva, Camuni and Romans: The Three ‘Faces’ of the Triangular Votive Altar from Breno (BS)

Abstract

The research highlights the close relationship between the Roman votive mensae and the local populations of Valle Camonica in the Regio X, where the highest number of such findings has been recorded. Starting from the triangular mensa of Breno (BS), a unique example in terms of shape, the onomastic analysis of the dedications on these sanctuary objects reveals the dedicators’ local identity. The dating of these inscribed monuments, coinciding with the valley’s Romanisation phase, suggests that indigenous populations favoured their use, possibly seeing them as markers of Romanity while still compatible with pre-Roman ritual practices.
