Abstract

This study provides an initial analysis of La maraca embrujada por jibaná, a novel by Manuel Zapata Olivella. The novel describes the tensions between empirical and scientific medicine in Colombia’s Chocó region. The study aims to define how Zapata Olivella highlights cooperation and empathy – which he believes are necessary to overcome the stigma imposed on the belief systems of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in Colombia – by working this opposition.
