Abstract
In this article I examine the different contributions made by the poet and diplomat Josep Carner (1884-1970) to the diffusion of Catalan culture around the world. Due to the long years of residence abroad he also spread the European ideals through articles in the Catalan press. He was an official in the Spanish Consular service between 1921-38, and after the Spanish War, he went into exile, first in Mexico and after World War II in Belgium. In both countries he always provided help to the diffusion of Catalan culture. After discussing Manuel Castells’ idea of informational society and Joseph S. Nye’s concept of soft power of, and noopolitik of John Arquilla and David Ronfeldt, paying attention to stateless nation-building and public diplomacy based on the case of Catalonia, I discuss the many contributions to soft power by Josep Carner.
