Abstract

The aim of this contribution is to propose an interpretation of territorial inequalities through the notion of environmental sacrifice. This notion designates variable-sized territories that suffer or have suffered severe environmental impacts due to activities such as industry, raw material extraction or hazardous waste management. After a concise state of the art on the various contributions that have directly or indirectly dealt with the issue of environmental sacrifice, the text will attempt to apply the notion in a Euro-Mediterranean context through the analysis of a very specific case study: the Syracuse petrochemical pole.
