Comment promouvoir la paix après la bombe atomique ?

Un projet inabouti d’encyclique (août-novembre 1945)

Abstract
On 9 August 1945, Pius XII asked Alfredo Ottaviani, Assessor of the Holy Office, to set up a commission to draft an encyclical on "The Church and International Questions". The Master of the Sacred Palace Mariano Cordovani was entrusted with the task and produced a draft. From September to November 1945, the members of the Commission led to the withdrawal of Cordovani's project and the tentative beginnings of a reflection on new themes, such as the impossibility of relying solely on the doctrine of just war to resolve international conflicts. Above all, the debates made it possible to reaffirm the need for a new international order based on the political organisation of all States in order to prevent armed conflicts. The discussions were closed at the end of 1945 without the adoption of any document. The fact remains, however, that new themes were introduced in the Holy Office that would return to public debate during the Cold War and at the time of the Council.
