A New Fragment of Sophocles’ Ission? The Lemma Σοφοκλέους in Stobeus 1.3.30
Abstract
This article discusses the possibility that the present fr. trag. adesp. 5 K.-Sn., a iambic trimeter transmitted by Stobaeus (1.3.30), may originate from Sophocles’ Ixion, a play now lost. The new attribution is prompted by the textual evidence in the Parisinus gr. 2129 of the author’s genitive Σοφοκλέους, added by a second hand next to the verse, alongside the indication ἠξίωνος (scil. Ἰξίονος) referring to the title of the drama. The existence of the lemma has not been recorded by editors so far, including Wachsmuth. In the second part of this article the fragment, for which the new number **296a is proposed, is presented with critical text, translation, and a commentary.
