Chapter | De nuevo sobre el epigrama latino del Viaje del Parnaso
Abstract
This article aims to rectify an error in the translation of the Latin epigram at the beginning of Cervantes’s Viaje del Parnaso, perpetuated until the recent BCRAE edition. The translations, which vary according to whether one or the other reading is adopted to rectify the princeps edition, can be grouped in two lines: one shared by Schevill, Bonilla and Medina; the other, which departs from Eijo and Garay, appears in Rodríguez Marín, and reaches Sevilla and Rey Hazas. Astrana Marín offered an explanation for the textual difficulties. But there was another solution: that of José Vallejo, which Miguel Herrero echoed in his edition. In this article, I explain why the latter seems preferable today.
