Abstract

The essay analyses Pasolini's translation of the Orestea for performances in the Syracuse theatre in 1960. Word by word and through constant comparison with the texts Pasolini used (mainly Paul Mazon's edition), the linguistic processes through which Aeschylus' language is broken down and then recomposed in Pasolini's poetic language are recorded, thus generating continuous semantic shifts between the original and the new text. By considering the variations of meaning in an organic way and relating them to each other, the interpretation of the modern poet emerges clearly and powerfully.
