Abstract

The essay illustrates the mass-men concept depicted by Elémire Zolla (1926-2022), writer, philosopher, and historian of religion, in the context of the Italian debate in the 50s. After a biographical introduction, the essay proceeds to focus on Zolla’s strong positions on modernity and mass society. In particular, mass society is described in-depth as guilty for the culture’s loss of holiness.
