Abstract
This study examines the narrative constructions of migrant experience in Emilia Smechowski’s books Wir Strebermigranten and Rückkehr nach Polen. The thesis argues that these narratives are indicative of the author’s attempts to establish meaning and identity in the midst of cultural ‘in-betweenness’. The author is concerned with making the traumatization of the feeling of foreignness manageable, with processing her own biographical problems, which can be traced back to cultural interference disorders in being German and Polish, and with attempting a collective identity articulation of second-generation Polish-speaking migrants living in Germany.
